Sand Dune Fun!

While touring the Sand Dunes National Monument near Alamagordo, NM we stopped to watch small children slide down the sand dunes which you see in the background. Asking permission to take their photos we talked to their mothers. Debbie who is holding her little boy is an Air Force wife whose husband is stationed at Holloman Air Force base. After 3 years she claims that she is "getting used to desert life" but it's a far cry from her home in Minot, North Dakota. Her friend Jennie, a pastor's wife, on her left is visiting Debbie from her home in Minot. It seemed like a great union for the two women and their children who played happily on the dunes as we talked. The little guy didn't have too much to say for himself!

northern New Mexico artist, Richard Sandoval

McLarry Fine Art Gallery on Canyon Road had a reception Friday (2/10/12) night for artist Richard Sandoval and his collection of paintings and sculptures. He has been painting New Mexico landscapes for most of his 70 years, concentrating on northern New Mexico. In addition to the work in the exhibit, Mr. Sandoval has illustrated books, exhibited at Spanish Market, written books, and has been involved artistically with New Mexico Magazine for many years. The gallery was packed with lifelong fans and newcomers to his art as well. He obligingly posed for this photo as others were snapping away as well.

Rose the Lavender Lady

Rose is definitely a vision in all her finery. For several years now whenever I am in Santa Fe, I visit the Farmers' Market on Saturdays. She is always there, selling her products which relate to her special color, such as sachet encased in lavender packets. Originally from the San Francisco Bay area, she has been living happily in Santa Fe for many years. She told me that she also is a film maker so next time I go to the market, I'll need to find out more about her interest and activity in film, tv, and theater.

While wandering the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe, I stopped at Kiran's booth where she was selling some of her original watercolors and acrylic paintings. She has been living in Santa Fe for the past sixteen years and her subject matter focuses on downtown storefronts, churches, and portraits of people and animals. Kiran has visited many countries: India, Spain, Greece, Nigeria, England and Sweden. In 2001 she earned a vendor license to display her work in the Plaza, directly across from the Palace of the Govenors on Palace Avenue.

War Memorial

The Plaza is the central attraction in downtown Santa Fe, and in its center is a tall Obelisk with an interesting history. To see a photo of the Obelisk, click here. According to the Nile Guide, a travel website with interesting facts about Santa Fe,

The obelisk in the center of the Plaza is called the Indian War Memorial Monument, and was erected in the 1860s to honor Federal troops killed in battles with Native Americans and Confederate forces. The inscription originally made reference to "savage Indians," but sometime in the 1970s a man dressed in a suit chiseled the word "savage" from the marble inscription. There are also pockmarks left by bullets in the monument. [I wonder why "dressed in a suit" is important in this explanation?]

Another website claims that the obelisk had been erected in honor of the men who fought in the Civil War and is called the Civil War Memorial.

Richard was sitting on a park bench in the Plaza in Santa Fe when I approached him. He told me that he has been living here for 16 years, leaving Denver, Colorado to join one of the most beautiful women in the world. She's still beautiful, but they are no longer together although they are both still residing in Santa Fe. I didn't press him for more details and he didn't offer any. I'd bet that there is an interesting story behind that!!

Madrid, NM was once a thriving mining town. Arriving in town after traveling The Turquoise Trail on Hwy 14 from Santa Fe, you can see remnants of the past. Many of the old buildings have been converted to galleries, restaurants and shops. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, as you can see from some the signs I photographed. The sign at the top has been hanging in the Mine Shaft Tavern for years and always makes me laugh, and the idea of Madrid always makes me smile! (Pronounce Mad-rid)

I met Coal on a bright, sunshiny day in the Plaza. Thinking that a dog with goggles is a bit unusual, I talked to the owner who informed me that Coal has a serious degenerative eye disease called pannus. The sun could blind him if his eyes are not protected. He is a patient and loving animal.

Eectroforming on Ceramics

I met Bob and his wife Lynne at a small but very cool gallery in Eldorado, New Mexico. Both of them work together to produce Southwestern style artwork. Bob, the ceramist, has been strongly influenced by the style of the Southwest culture and pottery. In his own words, Bob said, "My desire is to learn something new from each piece, and to use that knowledge to then produce a different, better work of art."

My first introduction to Santa Fe was at St. John's College in the summer of 1984 where I attended a 4-week seminar with other social studies and English teachers from around the United States. We were housed in the apartments shown below. Since that fateful summer, I've been traveling back and forth to this magical city from my home in St. Paul, MN.

Tapestry Weaving

Both Lynne and her husband are artists living in Eldorado, NM. I visited the art gallery in La Tienda Shopping Center and was able to chat with both of them. The ceramic mask was created by her husband, Bob, but Lynne did the weaving on the art piece. Soon she is giving a two-month-long class on weaving, and altho the class is full, she invited me to visit, to watch, and to take some photos.

I do believe that I will buy this piece before I leave New Mexico or one of the others I showed you here.

There is a large open field that is next to La Tienda Shopping Center in Eldorado, NM that has quite a number of these wooden figures facing the parking lot. No one seemed to be able to tell me why they were there. Initially it is a bit startling, but I found the entire set-up pretty amusing. Not exactly PC, but I enjoy the view... guess "the Indians are coming!"

Local artist printmaker

Jack McCarthy is an artist who lives in Eldorado, NM. A skillful printmaker with a sense of humor, I met him in a gallery in Eldorada that exhibits work of local artists. I found at least three of his prints that I would lovingly hang in my own home and many more that I would like to own. His prints have a whimsical sense of humour that appeals to me.

Anna is the owner of Nina's Closet, a clothing store of both new and consignment merchandise, in the Agora Plaza in Eldorado, New Mexico. She does a terrific job of merchandising all the apparel in her shop. She helped me find a wonderful cowboy hat and gave me a little history of the designer. I'll definitely be back!!

Reuben Again!

I ran into Reuben again! I first met him here (you gotta check this one out!) in April, 2010 and was quite taken with his appearance and coveted his jewelry. As DH and I were going into the LaFonda for breakfast on Sunday morning we ran into him. For relative strangers who see one another once or twice every couple years, we greeted each other warmly. He is a delightful man and certainly quite colorful!!

Maggi drove with us from St. Paul, Minnesota to Santa Fe, New Mexico, her second trip here. She is very adaptable and is a good traveler. She likes to sneak on the couch and the cushion we brought along is not as comfortable as her dog bed at home, which we should have here instead of this puny little thing. But, she looks comfortable enough!

A vendor from Santa Domingo Pueblo

Christopher Chavez from Santa Domingo Pueblo is one of the vendors selling his jewelry. As I walked among the tourists looking for some interesting photos, he greeted me with "Welcome Back!" Turned out that last summer he and I had had an interesting discussion about Pipestone, Minnesota, a source of some of the stones he uses for his designs. We also had a bit of a chat about Indian law, treaties, and some of the current case law about Indian land.

The other photo I'm posting today is almost a cliché of Santa Fe's Plaza. I
often wonder if the Indians get tired of the tourist, but I'm afraid to ask since I'm not a citizen myself.

While checking out the Plaza for some interesting photos, I met Zach. Another coincidence; he was visiting from Mounds, Minnesota. He told me that he'll be staying here for a short while because "his lady" moved here and is working at St. Vincent's Hospital Shortly, tho, Zach all be returning to Minnesota to resume his nursing studies at the University of Minnesota- Mankato.

ABC WEDNESDAY-Z-ZOWIE, THE RANCHOS CHURCH

Anyone who admires the work of Georgia O'Keeffe knows this church! It is reported to be the most photographed and painted church in the area. I really should have taken a photo of the front as this is the rear of the church...next time!

"The church is fortress-like, with adobe walls four feet thick and enormous buttresses. Light plays off its enormous sculptural form to reflect the change of line, time and space. The church's surface holds the community's history—generations of hands plastering and replastering the adobe walls. For many Taosenos, the church provides a place of worship on Sundays and holidays, for others it provides an anchor in the landscape."

What a hat!!

When I went to the Farmers' Market on Saturday I indulged in one of the huge gorgeous chocolate croissants that one of the vendors was selling. As I sat at a picnic table eating it, I notice the lovely young woman across from me wearing a spectacular cowboy hat. We chatted and I learned that Louann who is from California is considering moving to Santa Fe. Just another person enchanted by this magical city!

The other hat is the one I just recently bought for myself. It's very different from Louann's hat, but it is spectacular in its own way. Instead of felt, it is a soft, pliable leather, made in Santa Fe by Gina. If I were a resident here, I would buy another hat--a classic black felt cowboy hat with a silver band.

I told DH that I found men who wear cowboy hats very sexy; wonder if he'll buy one??

El Sanctuario de Chimayo

An important church close to Santa Fe is El Sanctuario de Chimayo, a place revered by many New Mexicans. El Santuario de Chimayo is a tiny shrine that is built on the site of what many believe to be a miracle associated with the crucifix of "Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas" (Our Lord of Esquipulas). El Santuario de Chimayo is also the site of "el pocito" the small pit of Holy Dirt which many people attribute as possessing remarkable curative powers. To learn more about this place, go here.

As you can see, the church and courtyard is still decorated for the holidays with a Christmas wreath and firolitos. I couldn't decide whether I liked the photo in B&W or color so I posted both versions.

Camera Critters--Not a lot of bull!

Have you ever been followed around like a dog by a creature of this size? This big guy wandered freely around the grounds and parking lot of the Sanctuario de Chimayo...a startling sight to our dog Maggi, who despite their differences in size this strange creature still aroused her curiosity. The steer ignored all of us, occasionally staring us balefully in the eyes. I was a little worried about our dog, but we all made it back to the safety of our car.

A Road Trip

Yesterday DH and I took a road trip from Santa Fe to Ranchos de Taos. It was a grand and glorious day as we wound our way along the High Road to Taos. On our way home we took the shorter route on Hwy 68 which is very scenic in parts, especially along the Rio Grande. In summer it is full of fun-seekers on rafts, but during the winter it's free of revelers. Its beauty can be see in the two photos below.

Meet Randy!

Randy is a rarity in Santa Fe...a native New Mexican. Born and reared in Albuquerque, I met him in The Camera Shop across from the historic La Fonda Hotel on San Francisco Street. I just got a new Canon Rebel camera and was having some difficulties with some of the new, unfamiliar settings. Within a few minutes Randy had solved the problem with skill, expertise and graciousness. He spends half of his time in Santa Fe and the other half in Albuquerque, working and attending school where he is majoring in Interior Design and Photography. Because of his personal characteristics. I predict success for this native New Mexican!!

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve at the Plaza was filled with colorful scenes. We ate next door to the Inn of the Anasazi (pictured above) at Tia Cocina on the second floor of the Hotel Chimayo, which was previously photographed here by Randy. The food was delicious; I had broiled trout covered by cornmeal. Jim had a combination Chimayo plate with the classic Southwestern blue corn tortillas, covered with green chili.

These are the first photos I have posted, using my new camera. Boy, do I have a lot to learn. Rob, get ready for some tutoring!!

Although I do not live in Santa Fe, I and my family visit as frequently as we are able. When I stay here I maintain a Santa Fe photo blog, which has fewer photos than my regular Visual St. Paul blog. It wasn't hard to select my favorite photo on this blog, tho. This magnificent bird resides at one of New Mexico's more fascinating places, the Wildlife Center, outside Santa Fe that we visit often. Belle of the Southwest

When the historic Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, was built in 1882, it was known as "The Belle of the Southwest." After some hard times, it was restored and now sits proudly across from the Old Town Plaza. As we approach Santa Fe which is about an hour away, we always stop to visit it and the shops in this part of the small city that is situated on Hwy 25.

Sanctuario de Guadalupe

Images of this Lady appears everywhere in Santa Fe. This particular statue stands in front of Santuario de Guadalupe and has frequent visitors, as you can see. Constructed in Mexico, it has an interesting history. (I scheduled a few photos from my archive, and we're still driving, but will get to Santa Fe soon!)

Catholics from Northern New Mexico made a journey from Mexico City with a 12 foot-tall, 4,000 pound statue of the Patron Saint of the Americas. The statue was placed in front of the Santuario de Guadalupe, the oldest church in the United States honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. The journey to New Mexico followed the Camino Real, the historic route taken from Mexico City to the northern territory of New Mexico by early Spanish settlers.

The statue and the spiritual and physical journey were born out of controversial use of one of the most revered and important images in Hispanic culture. But that is not why the faithful pursued this project. Their pursuit was one of dedication, faith and discovery.

The statue is the work of reknown Mexican artist Georgina "Gogy" Farias who herself has a strong devotion to Guadalupe.

It's About Time!

DH, Maggi our dog, and I left our Minnesota home and are driving to Santa Fe as you view this. Our son and grand-dog, Lexie is staying in our house while we are gone for our 2-month stay in one of the cities I love best. I took this photo a few years ago near the Plaza. Come back for more photos during the next couple months. I have a new camera and lens and am anxious to begin using it in Santa Fe.

Fiesta-Dancing in the Plaza

The cry of "Viva la Fiesta" has been reverberating through the streets of Old Santa Fe every autumn for 299 years. The sound generates a curious blend of thanksgiving, revelry and pride in the hearts of Santa Feans who celebrate Fiesta annually to commemorate Don Diego De Vargas' peaceful reoccupation of the City of Holy Faith in 1692.

A Bridge of Sorts--The Santa Fe Trail

This is a boardwalk over a remnant of the Santa Fe Trail. It's located at Pecos National Monument, one of my favorite spots just outside Santa Fe. I always go there at least once to visit the ruins while visiting this wonderful area.

Much of the land that helped improve the park for visitors was donated by the late actress Greer Garson and her husband.

The Sweetest Face

Sometimes people in the Plaza quickly approach and just as quickly walk by. While people-watching, I noticed a beautiful young woman with the sweetest face approach and pass by the bench on which I was sitting. I was a bit surprised at the tattoo she sported on her back...just didn't seem to fit my first impression of her "Madonna-like" face.

A Permanent Transplant?

I didn't get a chance to talk to both girls, but Laura with the big smile hails from Ashville, North Carolina where her folks still live in the mountains. Laura moved to Santa Fe about five years ago and loves it, especially the sunshine. I asked her if she plans to stay, and with a shrug of her shoulders, she replied, "Who knows!" Currently she is working two jobs; this one is with Matt Romero's Farmers Market vegetable stand and the other is with a non-profit: Santa Fe Mountain ?? I didn't take notes so my memory gave up the last word.

Turquoise and Silver

Turquoise and silver are well-coordnated with the prevailing colors of the Southwest culture. The woman sporting these unique nails works in a salon in Cincinnati and planned her pedicure carefully for her holiday in Santa Fe. She told me that the decoration would cost $45.00 with an additional $35 for the pedicure itself. She's lucky she works in a salon!

Tyler is probably one of the best baristas I have encountered in coffee shops that I have visited. A bit reserved he is cordial, helpful, and non-intrusive. I met him at Collected Works Bookstore and Coffeehouse on Galisteo Street where I visited regularly for my daily latte and a bit of internet work. I think that I caught him in a pensive mood here. Originally from Nashville, Tyler graduated from St John's in Santa Fe in 2009, left after graduation, but then returned about 10 months ago. I think that the pull of the Southwest got to him, too!

Santo Domingo Annual Arts and Crafts Festival-#3

I met these wonderful men at the Santo Domingo Pueblo on Labor Day week-end. They were sitting at a table collecting money for Disabled Native American Veterans. They were pleased that I felt honored to meet them, and I promised to send them photos after I returned home to Minnesota. Unfortunately, my camera lens was dirty, and I had nothing with me to clean it. I wish I could have taken more photos of them as a momento for them and for me.

I stopped in my tracks when I saw these two at the Santo Domingo Arts and Crafts Festival. I asked each of them the reasons for their NFL preference in a place 1200 miles away from Green Bay, Wi. Since the morning was a bit chilly, Catherine claimed that she was wearing the sweat shirt because she was cold! So much for team allegiance! We chatted, and she told me that she grew up in Santo Domingo but had just recently returned to the Pueblo after living in Denver, which she had loved. Donovan was somewhat noncommittal about the Packers. He revealed that he was helping his auntie, Brihilda Coriz whom you met yesterday, during the Labor Day weekend festival. After my short conversation with both of them, I hope that I convinced them to become committed fans!

Brihilda Coriz lives in the Santo Domingo Pueblo where she designs and creates the clothing she was selling at the annual Arts and Crafts Festival over Labor Day weekend. She mentioned that she and her husband used to work together, making jewelry. After 25 happy years of marriage, she sadly revealed that she lost her husband five years ago It was then that she began to make the clothing that you see in the photos. Her warm and friendly personality was as sunny as the garment you see hanging behind her. I promised to send her copies of these photos after I return to Minnesota.

He and I met last Tuesday and spent the afternoon chatting, talking about Santa Fe, and sharing photo blogging tips and stories. I couldn't have spent the afternoon with a more interesting and delightful person. Santa Fe is a magical place and meeting a full-time resident who shares my love for the city and photography was a great experience. Quechquimitl

Happy Birthday to Me!! I've wanted one of these Quechquimitl (Ruanas) for years and finally got one! I ordered it from Centinela Traditional Arts in Chimayo, New Mexico. I will feel very elegant wrapped in it. Happy, Happy Birthday to me!!

In some cultures this poncho-like garment, called a quechquemitl, is from Mexico and has been worn by indigenous Mexican women for around two thousand years. Before the Spanish arrived in 1521, noble women and priests wore this type of garment during ceremonies, and goddesses were often depicted wearing them in statues and paintings. Today, many ordinary indigenous women in northern and central Mexico wear quechquemitl for warmth and decoration each day.

Like most quechquemitl, they are traditionally composed of two rectangles of handwoven cloth stitched together to attach the end of each rectangle to the side of the other. This ingenious design forms a square garment that can be slipped over the head. The points of the square hang in front and back, but other quechquemitl are intended to be worn with the points hanging to the sides, over the shoulders, instead.

Meet Luna

Although Luna could not give me much information about herself, her parents filled in the blanks. I met them at the Tuesday Santa Fe Farmers' Market. As I strolled among the vendors, Luna approached me, offering a stone which she was attempting to eat as she ran barefoot near her parents' vegetable stand--organic produce which is the norm for the farmers selling their products. 15-month-old Luna hails from Velarde, NM and accompanies her parents when they sell at the Market. Because of her friendliness and charm , it was tempting to swoop her up in my arms and steal away. I was frankly surprised that they gave me permission to photograph Luna (when she was standing still!) and put her on my blog. Glad they did, though!

A Sharp Guy

Pat Romero (who is not related to Matt whom we featured here) can be found at the Santa Fe Farmers' Market on both Tuesdays and Saturdays during the season. His motto is: Keep on the Cutting Edge" as he sharpens knives, scissors, and tools. He grew up in Santa Fe and has been engaged in this important sharpening service as employment for all of his adult life. I asked him if it was a family business, but he repied that it was not: his father was in construction. Below you can see him bent over the tools of his trade with highly concentrated effort to keep his skills sharp.

Highway Memorials-ABC WEDNESDAY "H"

These decorated crosses are a common sight on the side of many of New Mexico highways. Each marks a spot where an automobile accident resulted in the deaths of some of the occupants. Either this spot had a huge accident claiming many lives or it is a dangerous place for automobiles. I have passed these specific markers many times on Old Las Vegas Highway as I drove to and from downtown, but decided to stop to photograph them. I was a bit startled to see the Star of David with the name of "Kate" attached. At one of the spots on Interstate 25 as I was driving from the Albuquerque airport I noted a family visiting and praying at one of the memorial spots. Gives one pause!

Louis Ramirez, A New Friend

To enable only patrons of several businesses and shops in downtown Santa Fe to park in their lot, Louis Ramirez, a 67-year-old retiree is employed to sit on a folding chair, guarding its entrance. I walked past him several times on my way to the bookstore and cafe where I often "hang out." Being a very gregarious fellow, Louis and I had a long chat about his background, He grew up in California in a Mexican family as either the 8th or 9th child in a family of 11 kids...he wasn't quite sure of his rank. His parents were from Mexico but he has never been there and would like to go "someday." In fact, he would be interested in doing some traveling beyond the western US states he has already visited. When I asked him where he would like to go, he said, "Anywhere the good Lord wants to send me." I gathered he is very devote, belonging to a non-denominational Fundamentalist Christian Fellowship Congregation. Louis has been in Santa Fe since 1981, and before his retirement, he worked at Grease Monkey doing "mechanical stuff." Before that he did some construction work. Before I could ask too many more questions, he turned the tables and started to interview me! When he heard that I'm originally from Wisconsin, he told me that I'm really a "Quesohead" ... Cheesehead sounds better in Spanish than in English! After our fond adieu, I had a thought...I wonder if he will let me park in the lot now since we're such good friends?!

CoCo, My Santa Fe Companion

This sweet little Border Collie lives across the highway from where I am staying in Santa Fe. According to her owner, CoCo is an "outside dog" with her own doghouse. He provides food and water for her there and has paid attention to her veterinary requirements: spayed, all shots with ID tags on her collar.

Shortly after I get up in the morning, CoCo appears on the backyard deck, remaining there 'til I leave for my adventures. When I return she lopes down the gravel driveway and beats me to the door. She'll remain on the deck every night until I go to bed, even if I'm in a different part of the casa. It's hard for me to honor my friends' request not to feed her or let her in their casa. Because her owner is gone almost all day long, 10-month old CoCo is alone and literally starved for affection and companionship. Because our family are animal lovers, an outside dog is a foreign concept to me and hard for me to understand. I'm worried that someday she might be injured or killed crossing the highway from her house to this casa. When I'm not here, one of my friends gives her some attention also. If I were driving instead of flying home, I think I would be tempted to engage in dognapping and whisk her away to Minnesota because of her sweet temperament and good nature.

Hot Stuff

I first met Matt Romero at the Santa Fe Saturday Farmers' Market. While roasting green chiles grown at his organic farm in Dixon, New Mexico, he kept up a steady, friendly banter about his farm, the chiles, and his background. After growing up in Espanola he spent 23 years in Colorado, learning how to talk like an Anglo (tongue in check with this remark). I assume that is where he spent many years as an executive chef, but he gave it up to farm about 8 years ago. He started out as a small vendor but quickly grew to become one of the largest vendors at the Santa Fe and Los Alamos markets. Matt was also instrumental in helping to get the 4.5 million dollar Santa Fe Farmers' Market started. He highly recommends organic farming, and his farming philosophy is worth reading right here. In the photos below, you can see Matt roasting a large, rotating basket of chiles, a New Mexico staple which is coming into harvest right now, and it's a big deal!! Notice the gloves he's wearing as he handles the hot roasted chiles.

Perspective-Theme Day, September, 2011

What kind of perspective do you have on death? Do you have a religious or secular outlook on its outer symbolic expression? Because much of the history, culture, and customs of Hispanics in New Mexico are so heavily intertwined with Roman Catholicism, my impression is that, whether its citizens are practicing Catholics or not, their perspective on honoring death seems to have a certain homogeneity. The cemeteries in New Mexico definitely look different from the Midwest because of the terrain, but there is also a common symbolism of artificial floral decorations and fenced and enclosed markers in many of them. I stopped at the Nambe´ cemetery and noticed frequent visitors to individual gravesites while I was there. I spoke to John Valdes in the photo below who was visiting the gravesite of his father, Esquepulo Valdes, who died at the age of 79 on June 29th of this year. John indicated that he visits and prays here often and will continue to do so. He told me quite a lot about his father and indicated that both Spanish and English are integral parts of his family and the community. From his perspective his culture and his religion gives him a particular perspective on the ways in which a death of a loved one is honored, one apparently shared by many members of his village, judging by the number of mourners who visited the cemetery while I was there.

Gyrfalcon?-ABC WEDNESDAY, "G"

We were introduced to this magnificent bird which is a cross between a Gyrfalcon and a Peregrine Falcon at the Wildlife Center outside of Santa Fe. I learned how to distinguish among Peregrine Falcons, Merlins, and Gyrfalcons:

Similar Species

Peregrine Falcon is most likely to be confused with Prairie Falcon, Merlin or the rare Gyrfalcon. Of these, the Prairie Falcon has the most similar size and shape, but it's found only in open areas of the West and is less tied to concentrations of shorebirds, ducks, or pigeons. Prairie Falcons are browner than Peregrines, with dark "armpit" patches under their wings. The average Merlin is substantially smaller than a Peregrine Falcon, with a more compact body, shorter wings, and a stockier appearance. They tend to target smaller birds and even dragonflies. Merlins lack the Peregrine's helmeted look and thick mustache or sideburn. The Gyrfalcon is bulkier than a Peregrine Falcon and is very rare in the continental United States. Gyrfalcons can take down larger birds like Herring Gulls or Common Goldeneyes that a Peregrine can’t really handle.

Not everyone is a City Daily Photos blogger, and a few years ago I found Becky's Blog outside of our group. Go visit her from time to time to see what she's posting. I have been following the career of this talented and beautiful young woman as she takes art classes in Santa Fe. I connected with Becky after I arrived, and we met Friday morning at The Pantry, a local restaurant that serves gargantuan breakfasts. The meal was delicious and the conversation was terrific.

Whoo! Whoo!-Camera Critters

The volunteers at the Wildlife Center are extraordinary people who obviously love animals and enjoy working with them. This is another place we regularly visit when we are here in Santa Fe. The center takes and rehabilitates injured wild animals and releases them if they are able to survive in the wild after they have been healed. Many of those who cannot survive on their own remain at the center, and some act as foster parents for other young abandoned animals who are brought to the Center. After the recent wildfires in New Mexico they received a number of burned, injured, and starving animals. They even have 18 bears in a special enclosure in an isolated location. The man holding the owl is one of the volunteers who travels from Taos twice a week to help and to become more knowledgeable about helping with birds. He formerly had volunteered elsewhere, but with mammals and finds that learning about the behavior and intelligence of birds a fascinating and challenging experience.

The Santa Fe Opera

One of the best parts of visiting Santa Fe in the summer is the chance to go to the Santa Fe Opera. Tonight I'm going to attend a performance of La Boheme. Woo Hoo!! I dislike posed photos such as these but because DH and granddaughter flew back to St. Paul yesterday, he had to pose in front of the poster of his favorite opera, Faust, which he unfortunately will miss. I'm staying behind to housesit for friends in Santa Fe who will be vacationing. A really tough assignment for me!

We have been treated to short periods of soft, gentle rain and several evenings of thunder showers. Here Olivia is waiting to capture a lightening strike. Our nine-year-old granddaughter, Olivia, is here in Santa Fe with us; and she is using her new camera Vivitar Vivicam for the first time. Because the instructions are minimal, we have yet to figure out how to correct and to eliminate the date from the photo. We posted her effort, nonetheless, because this portrait is typical of the people we see on the streets of Santa Fe during Indian Market: western-style shirt, cowboy hat, and bola necktie. Plus I think she's doing a great job of capturing images!

We arrived at the Plaza at 8:30 and already some of the parking lots were full and the streets were crowded with people enjoying the Indian Market. I noticed Adrian Wall from Jemez Pueblo carefully dusting off one of his pieces of sculpture with a fine brush. He cordially stopped his work to answer my questions, indicating that he started art work when he was very young and has been learning and perfecting his craft for 22 years. Since he has been showing his work at the annual Indian Market for 12 years, I'd consider him a pro!

Opera Lovers

Annalie is #36 in my 100 Strangers Project

Annalie's hat first caught my attention. She was taking photographs of the labyrinth in the courtyard entrance of the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in downtown Santa Fe. She and several friends from Las Cruces, New Mexico, including her sister seen in the background, came to Santa Fe to attend the Santa Fe opera rather than the Indian Market, although they won't miss any of those festivities either. They have seen two operas already and said that Thursday night's performance of The Last Savage was fantastic. They are eagerly waiting to see Faust next. Annalie is the Administrative Director of Congregation B'nai Zion in El Paso Texas,, a conservative congregation affiliated with with the United Synagogue of America.

I cannot tell a lie: This is another "illegal" post (according to CDP rules). I am still in St. Paul, Mn 'til I fly away to Mazatlán, México in 8 days. During the past few years I've been dividing my time between three fabulous places: St. Paul, México and Santa Fe so....I'v posted a theme day photo for each place. Forgive me?

This sculpture is in the Southwest Reading room in the downtown central Santa Fe Library. I do not neglect any of the other wonderful places in town, but this is the first place I visit when I hit Santa Fe. It's a treasure. After loading myself down with lots of regional literature books, I visit Canyon Road check Randy's Santa Fe Daily Photo for today, the art galleries, historical sights and many fine little restaurants where the locals hang out. First things first, though, literature to feed my soul.

This is part of the interior of 10,000 Waves, a spa extraordinare a few miles outside Santa Fe. After three hours there, after sitting in the sauna, relaxing in the communal hot tub, and having a massage, I felt like I could melt right back into the earth.

Primitive Images on handmade paper by Ginny Hogan

Artist Ginny Hogan lives in Santa Fe and learned the ancient art of papermaking when she attended Colorado State University. Handmade paper is formed from the cellulose fibers of plants.

Hogan explains in a brochure how she works the process: The pulp I make is 100% cotton, beaten in a Hollander. This I press onto a screen to form sheets. When dry, I treat the sheets with layers of acrylic paint and add images with acrylic and gouache. The images I use come from rock art painting and pecking, called pictographs and petroglyphs made by native people all over the world. While no one can decipher the exact meaning of these images, it is commonly believed they were used for shamanic rituals involving healing, hunting, fertility, and protection.
