New Mexico Roman Catholic Churches

The social and historical background of New Mexico has been largely influenced by the Roman Catholic Church.  As a result, cities, towns and villages have churches of various sizes and architecture.  To give you a sample, the collage reads clockwise from the top left: interior of the small church in Abiqui; the exterior of the church in Santa Cruz, probably built in 1733 or not long after, is the biggest and has been considered the best mission church in New Mexico; the church in Old Town, Albuquerque; and finally, the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis Assisi in downtown Santa Fe. There are many, many more!

(We arrived home in St. Paul, Mn today, but  will continue to post on this blog 'til I exhaust all my photos.  Come visit me here, too!)

  3. This post reminds me of our trip to San Antonio, Texas and a bus tour of the missions around San Antonio. Then, in their day, the tallest structures on the desert. I admired the Indians who went there more than the people who built the places. I think they were very brave to give up their native roots to follow the white man's ways. But they did and the missions are like an old pair of shoes.

  7. While not involved in religion, I do find churches fun to photograph. You've done an excellent job here! Very "Spanish" which is expected...

Sorry about your problems commenting...I had changed the settings, but now changed them back so hopefully you won't have any further problems.

I've had some problems on some blogs, too, but I think Blogger must be working on their system...

  8. What beautiful churches.

When you comment does it sometimes open up a thousand other windows and tabs? That happens to me too. It seems to be the blogs with the embedded option that do it to me. Frustrating b/c my work computer is old and I often have to shut it down.
