Cerrillos Opera House

Long abandoned, I wonder what this Opera House was like many years ago? Cerrillos is a village on the Turquoise Trail  about 15 miles south of Santa Fe.  It appears to have changed very little since it was founded during a lead strike in 1879; the old hotel, the saloon, and other buildings look like an Old West movie setting.

  1. That reminds me of the movie "How the West Was Won". Nice photo.

  2. This is fascinating. We can imagine beautiful people going there in the 19th century.....

  3. Abandoned places like this always make me curious about who opened it, what it was like when it operated, why it closed, who cared, etc.

Did you happen to see the "48 hours in Sante Fe" article in Nat. Geo. Traveler this month?

  4. Surprised it hasn't found a new purpose.

  5. I'm always intrigued by these western "Opera Houses" that are found in many small towns. They seem to be especially found in areas where mining was prevalent.

  6. Nice shot. I love the little triangular decorations [?].

Kate, I'm so glad to have found your blog, and thrilled to think that there is someone out there interested in house sitting!

  7. How sad that it's closed down. I'm also surprised it hasn't been "re-used" or at least re-furbished for historical value.

  8. Apparently it is too expensive for some young buck to buy, fix up, live in a few months, and sell at a huge profit.

  9. I love those old signs that were painted so many years ago, and those rock walls! If only those walls could talk, what a story they could tell.

  10. Yo found a precious gem! I wonder why those windows were walled of with a so complicate pattern of triangles. Maybe this building was used for something else after the opera, like some esoteric stuff...

  11. Thank you Kate! I would have never known if you and Dan hadn't tipped me off. This really made my day! Heck it made my year. I love Cerrillos and Madrid don't you? Great places for photos. I would love to meet for coffee before you leave. A little busy with a class at the commmunity college right now but we'll get together soon. Thanks again.
