Coal-February Theme Day, 2012

I met Coal on a bright, sunshiny day in the Plaza.  Thinking that a dog with goggles is a bit unusual, I talked to the owner who informed me that Coal has a serious degenerative eye disease called pannus.  The sun could blind him if his eyes are not protected. He is a patient and loving animal.

  2. Coal's owners are to be commended for recognizing the problem. Now Coal can still get out and be sociable with the help of his 'doggles'!

  4. What a wonderful dog- he must be very clever to accept the need to wear those goggles.

  17. I can just imagine what my dog would do to the goggles if I put them on him. But I know he would learn to tolerate them if I asked him to, just like Coal has. Good luck to Coal, he is a beautiful dog.

  18. So poignant! He is a beautiful animal and that's a tough affliction for a dog. Fortunately, he can still smell!

  20. I used to regularly see a "doggled" dog hanging his head out a car window as he rode by near my office. I was glad to see his eyes protected and he seemed to love seeing the world from that moving perch. Pooches seem to be so wonderfully adaptable, as Coal attests!

  22. What an interesting post, Kate. I have never heard of such a thing, probably because most dogs with the condition die early because they are not tended with the same care as these wonderful owners.

You commented that the east wing of the Capitol seems small. It is. But, the Capitol has wings in each direction, the west wing is bigger, and there is an additional building next door. The whole complex is pretty big.
