Signs in Madrid, NM

Madrid, NM was once a thriving mining town. Arriving in town after traveling The Turquoise Trail on Hwy 14 from Santa Fe, you can see remnants of the past.  Many of the old buildings have been converted to galleries, restaurants and shops.  The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, as you can see from some the signs I photographed. The sign at the top has been hanging in the Mine Shaft Tavern for years and always makes me laugh, and the idea of  Madrid always makes me smile! (Pronounce Mad-rid)

  2. There is a New Madrid in Missouri that is pronounced with a heavy accent on the first syllable. New MAAAdrid. I could never understand it why, if they name a town after a foreign place, they do not pronounce it correctly. Versailles, Kentucky, is pronounced locally as Ver-SALES.

That reminds me of a town In western Maryland that was named Pekin, named after Peking, China. When China became communist, they changed the name to Nikep -- Pekin backwards, which it what it is still known as today.

  7. The top sign made me laugh too Kate. Glad that the towns people have retained that sense of humour.

  8. Looks like a place I would like to see. I have seen that top sign used in Jerome, which is another mining town with a huge collection of humorous signs.

  10. I especially love the "Sorry We're Open" sign, but they're all great. I've not been to Madrid but have been to Jerome. I didn't notice any signs there, but that was a while back.
